ComplyDog includes a debug mode that checks whether Google Consent Mode is set up correctly on your website. It confirms that ComplyDog sets the consent default before any Google tags load, which Google requires for Consent Mode to work.
Turn on debug mode
Open your website with ?cdog_debug=1 added to the end of the address. For example:
https://yoursite.com/?cdog_debug=1
A small ComplyDog panel appears in the bottom left corner of the page with the result. Only you see it. Regular visitors to your site never see the panel.
Debug mode only works when Google Consent Mode is enabled for your cookie widget in the ComplyDog dashboard.
What the results mean
Consent Mode is set up correctly The consent default was set before your Google tags loaded. Nothing to do.
Your Google tags loaded before ComplyDog set the consent default Your Google tags started before ComplyDog could tell them what the visitor has agreed to.
No consent default was found Make sure Google Consent Mode is enabled in your ComplyDog dashboard, then copy the latest install code from the Install step and replace the code on your website.
No Google tags were detected on this page There are no Google tags (such as Google Analytics or Google Ads) on this page, so there is nothing to check.
Fixing tags that load too early
First, check whether the late tag uses Google tag gateway. If your Google tags load from your own domain instead of googletagmanager.com, you are using Google tag gateway, and the Google tag gateway instructions on this page apply instead.
If you're not using Google tag gateway:
- Code installed directly on your site: move the ComplyDog install code to the very top of the
<head>on every page, above any Google tags (gtag.js, Google Analytics, Google Ads, or Google Tag Manager). - Google Tag Manager: use the ComplyDog template from the Google Tag Manager Community Template Gallery, and set it to fire on the Consent Initialization - All Pages trigger. This makes sure ComplyDog runs before your other tags.
Then open your site with ?cdog_debug=1 again to confirm the panel shows that Consent Mode is set up correctly.
Google tag gateway
Google tag gateway serves your Google tags from your own domain instead of googletagmanager.com. Consent Mode works the same way with it: ComplyDog must set the consent default before the gateway-served tag loads.
- Code installed directly on your site: place the ComplyDog install code at the very top of the
<head>, above the Google tag gateway script. - Google Tag Manager loaded through the gateway: use the ComplyDog template from the Community Template Gallery on the Consent Initialization - All Pages trigger, so it runs before any other tag in your container.
Then open your site with ?cdog_debug=1 again to confirm the panel shows that Consent Mode is set up correctly.
